Belmont Shore Residents Association
MINUTES
EXECUTIVE BOARD MEETING
December 8, 2011
The meeting was called to order by Vice
President Terence Endersen at 6:00 pm. The other members of the Executive
Board present were: Aileen Colon, Secretary Jeff Miller, Treasurer Robert
O'Connor, Marvin Jones, and Robert Stropky. President Kurt Borsting and
Executive Board members Max Alavi, Chrisjeon Clemmer, Julie Dean, and John
Forstrom were absent. Twenty-four additional BSRA members and visitors were
present.
Librarian Debi Gurley-Vilander announced the holiday book sale, which will
begin Tuesday and continue for two weeks.
The agenda for this meeting and the minutes of the November 10 meeting were
approved.
LBPD East Division Commander Michael Beckman issued a warning about thieves
following FEDEX and UPS delivery trucks and taking items delivered at
residences. He urged residents to phone the police concerning any suspicious
persons or activity: he described one incident in which a resident reported
the license number of a suspicious vehicle, leading to the apprehension of a
criminal. Beckman advised that the number of police officers have decreased
by fifteen percent due to budget cuts, and there are no longer detectives
assigned to East Division.
Joseph Bradley of Long Beach Pedaler Society spoke about their pedicab
(bicycle taxi) operation, which began service in Belmont Shore three weeks
ago. He gave these details about their operation: All operators are trained
and licensed, they operate seven days per week, beginning at 6:30 pm, and
their rates are standardized and consistent: $1 per one-tenth mile for one
person, or $1.50 for two or three people. They can be found all along Second
Street or by phone at 980.1861 or on line at pedalersociety.com.
Dede Rossi, BSBA Executive Director, reviewed the recent successful
Christmas Parade and announced the shopping promotion Saturday and Sunday,
December 10 and 11, with two-hour free parking at the meters. She reported
two recent crimes at businesses in which the perpetrators were arrested: two
incidents of shoplifting and the use of a fraudulent gift card. Rossi also
announced the expansion of the restaurant, Tavern on 2, into the vacant
space next door.
There was no report for the Third Council District.
Parking Commission member (the residents' representative) Eric Forsberg
reported these recent actions by the commission: The traffic control boxes
on Second Street will be decorated with artwork, a contract for regular
maintenance and cleaning of the parking lots, including the landscaping, is
being considered, and damaged street trees will be replaced in February.
Vice President Terence Endersen reported the recent meeting between BSRA
President Kurt Borsting and BSBA President Frank Colonna, to discuss mutual
interests and concerns. Endersen announced a meeting at 5 pm Wednesday,
December 14 at Councilman DeLong's Nieto Avenue office to discuss the
Claremont Avenue traffic study and the possibility of a traffic signal
there.
Secretary Jeff Miller reported the results of the recent mailing of
membership renewal reminders: forty reminders were mailed, at a cost of
$17.60. Six membership checks were returned, adding $60 in dues payments. A
motion was approved authorizing payment of $15 for the annual registration
fee for the web site domain name shoreresidents.org.
Treasurer O'Connor reported the bank balance of $3,222. This will be
sufficient funding for no more than two more years of operation.
Robert Stropky explained the details of the initiative to plant additional
trees in the public strips between the street and sidewalks. Survey work has
been completed for Glendora, Granada, and Park Avenues; still remaining to
be considered are First Street, Livingston Drive, and The Toledo. Sixty
locations have been identified; fliers will be distributed to residents in
January. The city will supply the trees, which property owners must agree to
care for. Volunteers will be needed to accomplish the tree plantings.
Vice President Endersen reported plans to install new parking meters in the
beach parking lots and plans to extend and improve signage at the Dog Beach.
The next Beach Committee meeting is scheduled for 4 pm Thursday, December 15
at the Third Council District Nieto Avenue office.
Secretary Miller reported the closing and interior demolition of the Shore
House restaurant. A new restaurant, Simmzy's Pub, is planned for that
location. The business owners, Mike Simms and Anne Conness, explained their
plan, which Simms called a "gastropub". They have applied for a new beer and
wine license and are requesting alcohol service until midnight.
Miller explained the issue concerning the alcohol license: the Shore House
license had permitted service until 10 pm only, seven days per week, which
is also the limit at two of the most recently approved restaurants,
Boubouffe and Me Soo Hungry, and Quinn's Pub. Because of late-night problems
from Second Street bars, numerous residents have requested Councilman DeLong
to limit Simmzy's Pub service to 10 pm also. DeLong is hosting a meeting at
5:30 pm Monday, December 12 at his Nieto Avenue office to discuss Simmzy's
Pub.
A discussion among residents followed, with a number of concerns expressed
about any extension of alcohol service hours, as well as several comments
welcoming a new restaurant. In response to a request for a limit of one
television to limit noise, Simms said he plans four televisions, along the
west wall, behind the bar extending almost the length of that wall. He also
noted the drawing of the restaurant, which will have open windows on Second
Street and on LaVerne Avenue.
Nancy Wride announced a contest at belmontshore.patch.com, for the best
holiday-decorated house, which will result in a $100,000 prize for the local
school district.
The meeting was adjourned at 7:55 pm.
